In a short period of time, Vivia has identified a considerable number of existing drugs of verified safety and low toxicity (non-cytotoxic) which have proven effective against certain types of Hematologic Cancers.
This ability to identify multiple potential new treatments, allows us to select the best candidates for development. The best candidates eliminate all carcinogenic cells in all patient samples.
The majority of drugs are only effective in a subgroup of patients, as we have been able to verify with most drugs in development for these cancers.
However, when evaluating a high number of patient samples, we have been able to identify those drugs which are indeed effective in practically all patient samples, including those groups with the worst prognosis in these diseases, as is the p53 depletion subgroup, which implies efficacy in a vast majority of patients.
From amongst these candidates, Vivia has selected one which is effective in practically all patient samples, naming it Vivia009 and assigning it as the main candidate for clinical trials on patients suffering from these diseases. These trials are expected to begin in early 2011.
Vivia009 is, in essence, an existing drug with low toxicity, which carries the promise of being able to treat cancer without the usual toxicity associated with the treatment of these diseases. It is an approved drug of verified safety, which, in order to be effective, requires the change from oral to intravenous formulation with complex characteristics.
Vivia009 does not show any toxicity in the hematologic system (neutropenia and thrombocytopenia), despite its intravenous administration, as opposed to what happens with most of the drugs used for these cancers. It is a safe drug against cancer, the clinical validation of which would have great impact on the future treatment and quality of life of patients with these diseases.
A metabolite of the Vivia009 candidate drug has equal efficacy against cancer, not being active in the known target of Vivia009, representing another candidate which would require a further year or two of development.
At Vivia, we strive every day to improve the expectation and quality of life of Hematologic Cancer patients, trying to discover new and less aggressive channels for the treatment of said diseases.
