Cuidar project

At Vivia we consider it essential to collaborate with and to assist relatives acting as caregivers, those largely forgotten in this social problem, who carry out a daily fight to bring hope and to help those suffering from these diseases. To this end, Vivia has established an alliance with the CUIDAR Association, with which they closely collaborate by funding and co-developing the Cuidar Project.

The main objective of the Cuidar Project is to take care of the caregiver, through psychoeducational programs that inform and provide psychological support in handling stress associated with caregiving. The project is headed by Dr. Julieta Montejo, professor of the prestigious Department of Psychiatry of the University of California in San Diego (UCSD, USA). Dr. Montejo is specialized in the caregiver's syndrome, and is the President and founder of the CUIDAR Association, with which Vivia maintains a collaboration agreement.

The caregiver's syndrome implies that in the process of taking care of a patient (the person suffering the illness), caregivers tend to deny themselves any kind of care or attention. This syndrome is common and understandable. Still, taking care of a chronically or severely ill patient in itself creates an enormous burden of stress and suffering. In caregivers, this burden may lead to periods of depression and in any case, to their serious exhaustion, undoubtedly affecting their own capacity to take care of others, which is their main motivation.

Within the framework of the Cuidar Project, we plan to organize events with experts on this matter that will allow gathering a number of families that suffer a less common disease. At these events, participants will learn more about this phenomenon and will be shown and given access to tools with which to handle stress and the emotional burden associated with caregiving. The participation of the family unit, if possible including the patient, is important for everyone to become aware of the need to distribute the burden of caregiving and to provide sufficient relief to caregivers. All this is aimed at strengthening the caregiver, allowing him/her to provide more and better care to the person who is ill.

Additionally, these events will provide information about a psychological and biomedical study that is being carried out on this subject by the Cuidar Association and Vivia, and the participants will be given the opportunity to take part in it.

Presently, we are developing the pilot test for this Project in Malaga which, to date, has been focused on mothers taking care of patients suffering from pediatric leukemias and hemophilia.
